Hot Dog French Toast

Food Trip Friday

Hotdog French ToastFrench toast is a simple dish that kids and adult alike truly love. It is consists of two main elements the egg batter and the bread. The egg batter can be made in a lot of combination. For this recipe, I used eggs, milk , a little vanilla and cinnamon powder. The measurements will be dependent on how much french toast you will make. However, you can start with 2 eggs and 1/2 cup of milk or half and half.

This is French Toast with a twist. Instead of the regular day old bread dipped in egg batter. I added every kid’s favorite — hotdog. Here’s how to do it.

Cook the hotdogs as you usually do. You can use cocktail size hotdog; if you have the regular size one, cut them in to half.  For the bread — use day old sliced bread. Cut them into half, making it triangular. Take of the ends to make it smoother to roll. Now for the tricky part, gently roll the hotdog inside the bread. To make the ends locked together, place a toothpick. Just make sure to take it out once you’re done! (TIP: If your bread breaks as you try to roll them, they have dried up! Don’t worry, all you need is a piece of clean, slightly damp kitchen towel and cover the bread so it keeps the moisture in.) Dip the bread into the batter. On a preheated pan, place a little butter and pan fry the toast on low fire. Make sure all sides are cooked so you may have to twist and turn them after a minute. You may have to add butter as you go along.

Why do we use day old bread for French Toast? Fresh bread absorbs the egg batter easily, it tends to get mushy and fall apart as you dip them into the mixture while day old bread is a bit dry and crusty. That’s why its perfect for this dish.
